DIVERSITY IS COOL ... AND DELICIOUS!

Ai New York City's Associate Registrar, Laura Febrez organized a wonderful pot-luck feast in the Gallery today, which celebrated just how diverse a campus we really are.

A recent winner of the Top Idea Program's first prize, Laura's idea was to have a pot-luck lunch where employees who wished to participate would bring in a dish to share as a way of getting to know staff from other departments by sharing a meal with them. Participants did not need to cook anything themselves, but had to bring in something to participate in the luncheon.

Participants feasted on dishes and desserts such as roast pork and cassava, home-cooked lasagne, spring rolls, buffalo wings, sausage bread, Armenian cookies and more!

Thank you Laura for organizing such a great event! Congratulations!

SIZE MATTERS!

Ai New York City Fashion Design instructor and pattern maker Laura Moore was interviewed on the Dr. Oz show which aired on June 7. Shot here at Ai New York City, the segment focuses on "vanity sizing" and how sizing measurements vary by designer. Diane created a size 12 dress according to current sizing measurements and Dr. Oz staff set up a fitting room in a mall so that women who said they were a "size 12" could try on the dress with some interesting results. A clip of the show (and Laura doing what she does best) appears below:

Congratulations Laura!

DRAMA QUEENS (AND KINGS)

On Friday, June 17, Ai New York City Liberal Arts instructor Diane Orr's English 235 class ("Readers' Theater") gave a closed performance in the Gallery. Ten students took turns reading monologues from contemporary plays which in included "For Colored Girls", "A Girl's Guide to Chaos", "Catholic School Girls" and "Black Friday".

Campus President Tad Graham-Handley, Academic Dean Dave Moughalian and Liberal Arts and Sciences Department Chair John Mancuso were on hand to view the students' efforts.

Although a challenge to read aloud in front of others (including one's own classmates), the students read with the professionalism of seasoned actors and did an outstanding job of communicating the powerful messages put forth in each monologue!

Congratulations to Diane Orr for her encouragement and to her students:

SUZEN IN CHINA (CONTINUED)

Another installment from Ai New York City instructor SuZen from China! The link to photos appears at the end of her blog post ... enjoy!

It sure has been an adventure. From Dunhuang I arrived in Chengdu after a long, frustrating and exhausting trip with last minute plane cancellations, making connections at Xi’an and my cell phone running out of minutes. I won’t go into details - perhaps at another time. Fortunately I was picked up at the Chengdu airport about 11PM by the most wonderful woman, Zhen (English name, Grace) who is a Servas host. She drove me to her apartment and introduced me to husband, Yue. Both are the most generous and sweetest people. In the AM I met their cute 3 year little girl, Liang. Since there is so much to write about and so little time I will share one of the many highlights and that is the Leshan Great Buddha.

China is so large with so many places to see that are so varied. From the Gobi Desert to the tall mountains of Emei. I decided to take a bus to Leshan instead of doing a tour which definitely would have been a lot easier, but I had done a tour a few days before and was quite frustrated that we was rushed through the main attraction and then had to sit through a 40 minute knife and water purifer presentation. More on that later. The truth is I love photographing and I like to take my time. So after fighting off 2 people to get a taxi (not an easy feat in China) I got to the bus station and boarded the bus. Leshan is only 2 hours from Chengdu. The night before, Yue had made a reservation for me at a cheap hotel. Upon arriving in Leshan, it seemed that none of the taxi drivers knew it and wouldn’t drive me. I found a lovely woman in the bus station, who spoke English (another rare thing). She actually went outside to find a taxi and tell the driver where to take me. I must say I have met some of the most helpful people here. When I got to the hotel and saw that the room did not have a western toilet (a major requirement) I decided to find another place. I called another hotel to see if they had rooms and was about to find taxi to go there. Here I am schlepping my bags, when this young man with his father asked me if I was looking for a hotel and that there was a nice one nearby. I asked if it was theirs and he said no. They walked me there and took me up to the 17th floor where there was a really wonderful place. I was shown a room on the 18th floor that had a wonderful outdoor terrace rapped around the top floor and looked out onto the river and the reclining Buddha. Perfect!! I freshened up and went downstairs and the young man and father were there waiting to see if everything was OK. They proceeded to show me a good local restaurant and walked me to the bus stop to show me where to get the #13 bus to go to the great Buddha. I asked if they’d like to join me for lunch and said they were had eaten and needed to go do other things. Once again, I am so impressed with the generosity of the Chinese.

After eating 10 dumplings, I hopped the #13 bus to the Great Buddha finally. I bought a ticket to enter, and then walked up lots of steps. Along the way are several Buddhas carved into the mountain as well as a temple on the top. And then I saw the giant head - it’s WOW! Well worth the effort of getting there. The Leshan Great Buddha is carved into a mountain. It is 71 meters tall (that’s over 230 feet) and has three-meter-long (about 11 feet) fingers. The eight-meter-long (about 27 feet) instep is big enough for one hundred people to sit on and the 28-meter-wide (about 92 feet) shoulder is large enough to be a basketball playground.. WOW!! It is the largest carved stone Buddha in the world and it faces Mt Emei, where I was going next. This statue of Buddha Maitreya was begun in the 713 in the Tang Dynasty, and finished in the year 803, the statue took people more than 90 years to carve. During these years, thousands of workers had expended their efforts and wisdom on the project. As the biggest carved stone Buddha in the world, Leshan Giant Buddha is featured in poetry, song and story.

Ai NEW YORK CITY STUDENTS CREATE TOMORROW

Ai New York City President, Tad Graham-Handley and Academic Dean Dave Moughalian welcomed faculty, staff and students to a recognition ceremony held yesterday in the Gallery.

The celebration was to recognize all of our students who either won or participated in such prestigious shows as the Art Director's Club New York show, the Leron D&D Window Display competition, the Save-A-Sample competition and our very own Edible Art Fashion Show. Save-A-Sample Competition - Sponsored by SpecSimple.com, Save-a-Sample is a recycling effort that gathers up unused brochures, fabric, finish cards from design and architectural firms and delivers them to area design schools (Ai New York City is one of the schools that benefits from these donations). Each year, they have a hand-drawing competition, in which students who enter (schools must be listed as a participating school) are asked to create exceptional hand drawings. A $1,000 scholarship is awarded to the grand prize winner and the their school also receives a monetary award. We are proud of the fact that Ai New York City has won the top prize for three consecutive years!

GREETINGS FROM CHINA

Ai New York City instructor SuZen sends her greetings to all from China. Her commentary and a link to her Gallery appears below. This is the first of what will hopefully be more Blog posts so stay tuned!

Hi all,
Having an amazing time. China is great and sometimes very, very challenging! Unfortunately the internet is not that easy to connect to and although I began writing a blog to share my experiences - somehow there was an error and I have not been able to publish it. Miracles!! I found out yesterday that there is an Apple store in Beijing. There seems to be everything else American here - ie. McDonald's, KFC, Gap, Zara to name a few, so finding an Apple store was a major relief. After spending literally hours here (still here), they finally figured solved the error. So now you can read my blog.

Just to give a quick update. The first 3 nights in Beijing I stayed at a very nice hotel, Jade Garden Hotel, thanks to Corey for the recommendation. It is a great location near the Forbidden City and down the street form the Night Market. More about these when you read my blog. After 3 days in Beijing, sightseeing and meeting lots of friends of friends, being jet lagged and totally exhausted, I decided to go north to Chengde for a few days to chill out and relax a bit. Can't say I did. Too many wonderful places to visit.

What brought me to Chengde was to see the tallest statue of Buddha in the world. Made from 5 different kinds of wood, Buddha Guanyin (Avalokashavara) has 42 arms and in each palm is an eye and in each hand is a skull, lotus, and other Buddhist instruments. The detail of the carving and the draping of the robe is truly breathtaking and sooo elegant. The Buddha standing over 66" is located at the Puning Temple - one of 8 temples in Chengde. More about this is my blog. If you want to see some photos go to:

http://gallery.me.com/suzennyc#100938

Anyhow so much to share. I can't believe I arrived almost a week ago and have seen so much. And so much more to see. Tomorrow I hope to go to the Great Wall and then head south to Xi'an.

Thinking of you and hoping you are well and happy.
love, peace + blessings,
SuZen
