A CELEBRATION OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

Ai New York City Liberal Arts and Sciences instructor Diane Orr recently attended WNET's Celebration of Teaching and Learning at the New York Hilton Hotel on March 17.  This symposium is held annually and the 2012 edition is the seventh such conference.

Diane chatted with actor Henry Winkler ( "The Fonz from the TV series "Happy Days") (see photo below) who gave one of the inspirational speeches heard at Saturday's session.  Diane also interacted with Professors Michael Sandel and Henry "Skip" Gates who spoke on Saturday.  Diane notes that Professor Sandel authored the Justice series which is currently used in her Ethics class.  Professor Gates previewed his new public television series which will air on March 25 at 8:00 p.m.  The show will trace popular Americans' roots and origins.  Featured on the series will be actor Kevin Bacon and Georgia Congressman John Lewis who appears on one of the sample speech films used in the Public Presentation class at Ai New York City.

AI NEW YORK CITY DESIGN PRODUCTION TEAM CLASS GETS REAL-WORLD TRAINING

Ai New York City instructor Soosan Silanee lead her Design Production Team class in a real-life new business project, collaborating with real-life clients EdVenture Partners and an emerging internet company called Zaahah, which is a platform that socially connects you with your online searches.  The students created their own marketing/design agency and each student was assigned a specific department such as finance, public relations, strategy, advertising, coordinators, research and presentations.  The "agency" was given a $3,000 budget to work with as well as the business objective to gain 75,000 registered users on Zaahah.com via Ai New York City marketing.  Planning a promotional event such as the event held in the Gallery on Thursday evening, March 8 was one of the course requirements for the quarter.  The event boasted three DJs, three raffle drawings, design competition (similar to cut & paste), food and prizes, which included Beats by Dre, A Wacom tablet, 16GB flash drive as well as complementary gift cards for the first 25 users registered.  Check out the web links and poster below!

We are proud of everyone who contributed to this effort.  Great job Soosan and your design production team!
