EAT DESSERT FIRST!

Ai New York City Staff and faculty were treated to an hour-long ice cream social at 12 noon this afternoon in the third floor employee lounge.

A Good-Humor ice cream cart was on hand and staffers/faculty got to sample classic treats such as ice cream sandwiches, sundae cones, frozen fruit bars and other tempting chilled delights. Ai New York City Human Resources Director, Camille Bateman and Human Resources Generalist, Dianna Harper donned chef's hats and aprons and greeted the staff who stopped by. A photo of the two appears above.

HELVETICA ANYONE?

No ... it is not a type of cheese, but the most pervasive type style known to the graphic arts.

Ai New York City GD Instructor Marcos Chavez took his Typography I students on an exploration of this popular type font and asked them to reconstruct each letter in the Extra Bold version of the font out of various foods such as candy, vegetables, wasabi and even salad dressing! He outlines the process below:

"... Students worked in teams in the context of a photo shoot to (work against the clock) to create and execute the full alphabet within 1 class period. During the following week teams worked together to layout the letters into a full alphabet, words, and sentences in order to better understand kerning (letter and word spacing), leading (the amount of spaces between sentences). Students laid out a classic typographic sentence that contains each letter of the alphabet (The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.)."

Marcos did the same project with his students last year and a video of the process appears below:

Great job everyone!

POST-ITS AND PIZZA - POSTSCRIPT

AIGA Student Chapter, under the expert supervision of Ai New York City GD Faculty Marcos Chavez and SuZen, showed that there are more uses of Post-It notes than meets the eye. On Friday, August 19, students decorated the 7th Floor wall space in a colorful citiscape using four different colors of Post-Its. The process took four hours to complete and the space will be the chapter's display space for future happenings.

If any Graphic Design students are interested in joining AIGA, please contact SuZen or Marcos Chavez.
