Continuing a frequent practice, President David Warren invites all students to come to the Student Lounge, have pizza and talk to him about anything on their minds. He is a big believer in open communication with students.

FASHION & INTERIORS – A COLLABORATION

Exciting gallery show was a joint effort of the Fashion Design & Interior Design programs. The Opening Reception was held on February 4th, with Asian food carrying out the theme. Show description appears below.

This exhibit is a collaboration of inspiration by the fashion and interior design departments.

The exhibit displays Fashion Design students Vikki Nulman and Heather Slingerland's spring/summer 2010 collections. The ID department chair, Erin Cantor, asked Richard Munson to create a backdrop for the designs of some of the fashion students.

From Rich Munson, Interior Design Curator:
With my history in working with stylist Jason Farrer as well as independently styling a few shoots for Tokion Magazine where I worked as market editor, I was happy to take on the project. I began working with various layouts and material usage for the gallery at 11 Beach Street over Christmas break.
Both of the fashion student’s collections are very structural. Vikki Nulman even sent me photos of buildings that inspired her. With these photos I was able to put a plan into effect.

Upon review of the gallery space I found a color palette of off white, chocolate brown and charcoal. The walls of the gallery are extremely textural with marks of the past work shown throughout. I found this to be a beautiful texture that I wanted to work with instead of cover up.

In choosing materials I felt it would be best to work with organic cottons and to use natural tea staining techniques to dye the less organic paper lanterns. Also in preparation of the approaching Chinese New Year February 14th I included a bowl of tangerines which traditionally are meant to bring good luck.

A few of the other interior design students found a way to work with my aesthetic of raw exposed edges, looking like the infrastructure of an architectural system. They created a beautiful geometric installation counterbalancing my organic shapes and shadows.

From Vikki Nulman, Fashion Design Curator
I happen to love architecture and am always looking up as I walk down the street, so I decided to use that as my inspiration. I have done a collection inspired by Japanese architecture. Each piece was designed after a specific building or space. The collection is asymmetrical. I created the fabric design as well. The fabric colors are black washed lame, Belgium light teal linen and embossed cream organza.

From Heather Slingerland
My collection is entitled Sleep Study, and with that in mind I chose fabrics with a soft dreamy appeal, a thick and thin neoprene in light pink and gray with gray elastic. The technique I used to construct the garments is similar to a dream, fabrics or pieces placed randomly together with a few bare spots or holes in between. Sleep is an idea that we do no fully understand and I wanted to propose this idea as clothing.

Creative Competition for All

According to President Warren, AiNYC is in the process of preparing a self-study in order to demonstrate to various authorities that the school is ready to offer the 4 year Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree.

We want to create a message that captures the essence of our efforts. Here are some ideas already put forth:

On our way to the BFA!
Onward! Upward! BFA!
Next stop: BFA!

Got any ideas? If we use your entry, lunch for 2 at the Tribeca Grill is yours!
