Portfolio Review a Smashing Success!
Director of Career Services Marc Scoleri
Week 11 was filled with excitement as the December 2009 Portfolio Reviews took place in the Beach Street Gallery. Check out the highlights compiled by the Career Services Team.
Video Production
Matthew Burgos of Burgos Media returned and let us know how much he loved our students. He told graduate Irene Limato that he wanted to get her in touch with PBS! Jessica Jones from the Station Media is actively seeking candidates and complimented the wonderful demo reels of our VP students. Tesia DeCouto let us know she has been hired to do A/V Screenings at her internship site, The Soho House! Duwayne Francis has begun to get offers of paid gigs at his internship site SOB’s.
Fashion Design
Clients from well-known companies JCrew and Club Monaco attended the show. A client from The Eastman Group said that student Dan Douglas was “exactly what (he) was looking for.” Recruiters from Adecco complimented the work of all the students and plan to return to future shows. Tia’s Place is so happy with the intern they recruited from our September show that they returned to the December show for more of our students! Stanley Meyer from Stanley Pleating and Stitching offered to come do a presentation in our gallery.
Interior Design
Ethan Allen is interviewing at least one of our students for a part-time job. Representatives from the company attended the show and were impressed with the graduate presentations. Networking opportunities between the Video Production and Interior Design Majors occurred. A Film Production company is interviewing one of our ID students to do set design. One of our attending employers from a lighting company was very impressed and called a couple of her ID clients to come check out the show. The employer also networked with and was very impressed by the Chandelier Designer husband of one of our Portfolio Students.
Graphic Design, Web Design & Interactive Media
Several internship opportunities were obtained during the event from the following companies; Marvel Comics, The K Buzz, Emperor’s New Clothes, Webster Consultants, Burgos Media Solutions, The Station and Rapp Advertising.
Francisco Pereira, Owner, GD AINYC Alumnus started his own Graphic Design business which has really taken off! Sony Music – One of our long time internship partners recently hired Richard Liriano, WDIM FA 09 intern as a permanent Freelance Web Designer. So far, six graduates obtained interviews from industry professionals who attended the portfolio event.

Fashionista Challenge Screening & Reception
After a year of planning, production and editing, the Fashionista Challenge reached its climax– the premier of the finished film, followed by a gala reception.
Alumni, students, staff and faculty, were invited to the grand event.
The Gallery was filled with anxious and excited viewers. Challengers and judges were eager to see the work they had done many months ago.
Marifrances Boccia, Alumni Coordinator and co-executive producer of the show, thanked all who had made the production possible. Special thanks went to Len Carter, (2005 Video Production Alumnus & 2008 Wall of Fame honoree) who is no stranger to
television production having worked on numerous reality based projects for the networks. Len wore many hats for the production (Judge, Executive Producer, Director & Graphic Artist) showcasing for all his various talents while working long hours
editing the show into a true reality TV production.
The undertaking was a smashing success, unique in that no other Art Institute has done this type of “reality show” production before. Everyone in the audience was proud to see the results of the hard work put forth by students and alumni; all look forward to a reprise of the Fashionista Challenge next year.
Coming Soon to The Art Institute of New York City: ART WARS – Graphic Design alumni and students put their design talents to the test!
